Dublin Conservation Commission

Minutes
Wednesday, June 17,2009

Present: Jack Lewis, Sue Yarger, Jerry Branch, Karen Bunch, Rusty Bastedo and guest Curt Merrick

Minutes:  The May minutes were approved.

Invasive Upland Plants: Sue confirmed Doug Cygan will be giving his presentation on July 23 at 7:00 in the multi-purpose room of the Dublin Library. Jaffrey, Peterborough, Hancock and Harrisville concoms have been notified and a notice will be in the Yankee calendar.

Dublin Lake: Karen reported on the June 16 weed watch from the Women’s Club Beach.  No invasive plants were found.  She and Felicity Pool did water testing of the inlets on June 2, and they plan to do tests at the deepest spot of the lake on June 18th. The VLAP Annual Report for Dublin Lake and all other participating lakes is now available on the NHDES website.

Karen, Sue and Bill will be attending the NHLA Lakes Congress on June 26 in New London. Karen informed us that the speaker at the VLAP training in May described a study looking for a possible link between ALS and~some of the~cyanobacteria.  Cyanobacteria has been found in Lake Monomanac in Rindge.~This bacteria is a blue green scum that looks like anti-freeze.

An article on water testing, written by Karen and Felicity, will appear in the July Advocate.

A mailing will be sent out to Lakefront property owners in the town of Dublin, and we're hoping the lake hosts will be able to help with envelope stuffing.  The Lake Host program at the Dublin public boat landing will start on July 4.

Howe Reservoir: Jerry reported that the DES said all that was required now for us to move ahead was defining the wetlands. The DES is pleased with our plans and willing to help with grants. Jack said The Dublin School may be interested in having a student work force assist with the trail work and clean-up. The Rotary is enthusiastically willing to plant native specimens which hopefully will be donated. Dublin is very grateful to the Monadnock Rotary Club!

Beetles: These will be coming in 2 batches for a total of 2000 beetles vs. the 3000 we had wanted due to their price increase. The first shipment will be for 1000 the end of July and the 2nd 1000, the end of Aug. Suzan made a motion to order the 2000 beetles and to have the Dublin Concom make up the net increase in cost. Rusty seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

Japanese Knotweed: Rusty pointed out that it was blooming 2 weeks earlier than usual and Sue told us there is a knotweed eating beetle in Europe which is not yet approved by the USA. Jack agreed to look at small-ish patches of knotweed as an experiment to see if we could kill it according to the cut-RoundUp-black plastic method. If successful, we will attempt to do this in the fall on certain larger patches.

Easement Monitoring: This will be done on a couple of properties in the fall. We’ll need to make notes for the state as to the weather, who goes and comments.

Trail Clean-up: The board will plan to do trail work at a mutually agreeable date. Rusty will set the time and place.

Other:  The board discussed future articles for the Advocate re: Howe Reservoir in Aug and the Beetles in Sept as well as a lake article for July, a trail maintenance article for Oct. and Easement Monitoring for Nov.

Sue moved we adjourn at 9:00, seconded by Rusty.

Our next meeting is July 8.

Respectfully submitted, Suzie Macy, acting secretary.
