Dublin Conservation Commission
Minutes
April 14, 2010
Present: Jack Lewis, Rusty Bastedo, Louisa Birch, Jerry Branch, Suzan Macy, Sue Yarger
The chair welcomed our newest member, Louisa Birch, and announced that Sue Yarger had been reappointed to the Commission and that Sterling Abram was going to be the Selectmen’s representative to the Commission for the next year.
The minutes of the March 10 meeting were approved as amended.
We opened the main meeting with a review of Karen’s Lake Report. The Lake Host Program received a $1,000 grant from NH Lakes and a $500 grant the Badger Monadnock Fund. The DCC has been asked to hire local high school students with the Badger funding.
Howe Reservoir property: We discussed our interest in figuring out how to keep it undeveloped land.
Mud Pond/Life Safety land: We discussed a recommendation by the monitor from the Monadnock Conservancy to let this land return to emerging forest.
Monitoring of Conservation Properties: Sue will arrange times to review the remaining LCIP properties, and Jack will arrange times to review the two Forest Society properties
Knotweed. Sue informed us that the injection of plants must be done from the state. She is contacting Mr. Taylor in this regard. The board would like to choose sites and needs volunteers to inject the knotweed, possibly starting on 101 and the Carr’s Store 137 areas. We will need the Rte 137 property owner’s permission. We discussed putting up a sign announcing this was a DCC experiment on knotweed eradication.
Howe Reservoir. A DCC member has noticed that there may have been some illegal cutting of trees at the shoreline on the east side of the reservoir. Members were asked to take a look at the location in order to determine whether the DCC needs to discuss the possible cutting with DES. Jerry said the Rotary Club has bought 6 picnic tables for the Howe land. Thanks Rotary Club! Also, Jerry is planting wildflower seeds in the meadow and is looking for a work crew to clear trees that have recently fallen on trails.
Other Business: Attendees at the SWRPC meeting mentioned that they found the dinner fine and the speaker quite interesting. His topic, recycling, caused the committee to express considerable interest in how Dublin is doing in recycling. Several anecdotes of cases where the town doesn’t appear fully committed to recycling were noted, and the Commission members thought that we should consider working more closely with the town’s Recycling Committee.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:37 PM. Next meeting was scheduled for May 12, 2010.
